How perspective works

Perspective is how near and far objects relate in your photograph. Learn how your camera position changes their apparent size, spacing and overlap.

Start with where you stand

Picture a rock beside a lake, with a mountain in the distance. Stand close to the rock and it can fill much of your frame. Step back and the mountain becomes more prominent compared with the rock.

Neither object has changed size. You've changed your viewpoint. That change affects how the objects look in relation to each other, which is what we mean by perspective.

Why nearby objects look larger

Hold one hand near your face and the other at arm's length. Your closer hand looks larger, even though both hands are about the same size. The same idea applies to objects in a photograph.

Distance matters most when something is close to the camera. If you move from four metres away from a rock to two metres away, you halve that distance. The same two-metre move barely changes your distance to a mountain a kilometre away. That's why the rock grows much more than the mountain in your frame.

Use this when you want a stronger foreground. Move closer, then check that the rock, flowers or other nearby details don't hide something you want to include. For a quieter foreground, try stepping back.

What changing focal length does

Focal length controls your field of view: how much of the scene your camera includes. From the same position, a shorter focal length shows a wider view. A longer focal length shows a narrower view.

Zoom in without moving and both the rock and mountain grow in the frame. Their size relationship stays the same. You may crop out the rock entirely, but cropping it out isn't a change in perspective.

Why a longer lens can seem to bring the background closer

Suppose you use a longer focal length, then step back to keep the rock about the same size in your photograph. The mountain now looks larger compared with the rock. The scene may seem flatter, with less space between its layers.

Stepping back caused that perspective change. The longer focal length helped you keep similar framing. This combination is often called compression, but the lens hasn't moved the mountain closer.

Move sideways or change height

Distance isn't your only choice. If a tree overlaps a mountain summit, take a small step sideways. The nearby tree shifts across your view more than the distant mountain, which can separate them.

Raising the camera may reveal a path hidden behind a rock. Lowering it may hide that path or place the rock against a different part of the background. Check the overlap instead of assuming that a lower viewpoint always gives more depth.

Keep height and tilt separate. In this lab's level-camera model, raising the camera changes foreground placement while the horizon stays centred. Tilt downward to move the horizon higher in the frame and include more ground.

Try a simple comparison

  1. Open the simulator and save its starting view as comparison A.
  2. Keep fixed camera position selected. Increase focal length and watch the rock-to-mountain height ratio stay the same.
  3. Reset the camera. Turn on maintain subject size, then increase focal length again. Watch the camera move back and the ratio change.
  4. Save comparison B. Compare the mountain's size while the rock stays similarly framed.

Try the same exercise outdoors with a nearby object and a distant feature. Keep your camera pointed in the same direction when comparing focal lengths. Make one change at a time so you can see what caused the difference.

Does a wide-angle lens automatically exaggerate perspective?

No. A close viewpoint creates a strong difference between near and far objects. A wide-angle lens lets you include more of the scene from that position. Changing to a wider lens without moving doesn't create a new size relationship.

Is there one correct perspective for a landscape?

No. A large foreground can lead attention into a scene, while a more balanced size relationship can give the background greater presence. Choose the viewpoint that helps show what caught your attention.
